What's the benefits of the D2 visa?
Rights
Visa holders are granted the ability to live, work, and/or study in Portugal, with full access to public services including education and healthcare.

N.H.R. Status
Visa holders are eligible to apply for the NHR tax regime, offering substantial tax benefits, including exemptions on foreign income for up to 10 years.
Permanent residency / Citizenship
After five years, visa holders may apply for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship, granting full EU rights, such as freedom of movement and the ability to work across the EU.
Important to know
Incomes:
- 1st adult (applicant): 100% of the current minimum wage (820€/month) = 9,840€/year;
- 2nd adult or more: 50% of the current minimum wage (410€/month) = 4,920€/year;
- Children under 18 and dependent adults: 30% of the current minimum wage (246€/month) = 2,952€/year.
Even if the minimum is met, there’s a risk of denial. We recommend showing more than the minimum.
Documents:
- Proof of sufficient financial means, such as a local bank statement;
- Freelancers: Copy of a contract and proof of qualifications (if applicable); Entrepreneurs: Business plan and proof of investment or access to funding;
- Authorization for AIMA to consult the Portuguese criminal record;
- Apostilled criminal record from any country lived in for over a year after turning 18;
- Proof of accommodation (1-year rental contract);
- Completed D2 application form;
- Valid passport (with at least 6 months remaining before travel);
- Two passport-sized photos;
- Valid travel insurance with health coverage;
- Six months of bank statements;
- Portuguese bank account;
- NIF (Portuguese tax number).
Applicants must designate a Tax Representative in Portugal or receive notifications from the Tax Authority via the online portal (Portal das Finanças) or an authorized electronic mailbox (Via CTT) to comply with tax obligations.
